I'm finding more pics of guys with the cut out haversacks. This NCO has a cut out haversack he is using as suspenders and a M7 rubber gas mask bag as a backpack. It seems pretty common that Rangers held on to their gas mask bags during the Normandy Campaign. In this short clip where you catch a ranger Column there's at least 3 Rangers with the gas mask bags being used as back backs and many others with the bag strapped to their leg.
It's also very common to see either a general purpose bag or a Thompson spare magazine bag attached below the meat can pouch on the haversack.
Full clip here! Ranger Colum can be seen at 3:13
super interesting to just see all the different changes each soldier made to his kit
When you watch the Rangers go by one of them has a canteen where his bayonet should be on his haversack. Can't tell if it is a metal or plastic cap on it though.
I believe that WWII Impressions sells the haversack suspenders. It’s a great look!
